Norwalk : Municipal Water System Rates to Increase 38%
About 3,400 residents and businesses served by the city’s municipal water system face a 38% increase in rates next month. The higher rates, which were approved Tuesday by the City Council, will appear on water bills at the end of September.
The average residential bill, which covers two-month periods, will increase from $36.66 to about $50. Increases for business customers will vary, depending upon how much water they use.
Water department officials requested the rate increase to compensate for increased operating and water costs, said Kerry Burns, city budget administrator.
The municipal water system pumps most of its water from local wells, but it also buys water from the cities of Santa Fe Springs and Cerritos. The system has not had a rate increase since 1988.
