Hospitals Net $50,000 at ‘Mistress’

Daniel Freeman Hospitals netted $50,000 at the Aug. 17 West Coast premiere screening of “Mistress” at the Director’s Guild of America. Attending the after-party were cast members Robert Wuhl, Martin Landau, Jean Smart, Sheryl Lee Ralph and Tuesday Knight, and the film’s director, Barry Primus. Bette Midler, Joe Pesci and Sally Kirkland were among other celebrities at the event. Proceeds are earmarked for the hospitals’ Emergency Relief Fund to recoup costs incurred during the Los Angeles riots.

Los Angeles Youth Programs announced receipt of a $25,000 grant from the Weingart Foundation for the Family Outreach and Respite Care program, which provides in-home services for chronically ill children and their families. The organization’s Venice Camp for low-income and disabled children received a $5,000 grant from Gannett Communities Fund and a $2,500 grant from American Savings Bank.

Women in Theatre has received a $2,500 grant from the Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department. The gift will be applied to WIT’s Reach Out Program, a project that introduces art as a healing process to the disadvantaged.

Glendale Adventist Medical Center’s Capital Campaign goal of $3 million has passed its halfway mark in pledges and gifts to fund construction of a four-level Medical Services Pavilion. The facility will enhance maternity, neonatal care, out-patient services and other programs. Donations include a $75,000 grant from the Ralph M. Parsons Foundation. A number of pledges have come from the community and from the hospital’s Women’s Guild, Governing Board and Civic Advisory Board.

American Red Cross, San Gabriel Valley Chapter’s disaster relief fund, received $10,000, a portion of the proceeds from the Pasadena Jazz Festival Aug. 8-9 at the Ambassador Auditorium. Ambassador Foundation sponsored the event, which included performances by Milt Jackson.

Watts Health Foundation received $400,000 Aug. 12 from PacifiCare Foundation. The funds are to develop and operate a new mobile medical unit fitted with X-ray and mammography equipment to provide diagnostic services for the underserved in Los Angeles, Orange and San Bernardino counties. The service is expected to be in operation by December. It will operate through the new Partnership for Health and Healing established by Watts Health Foundation and PacifiCare.

Aid for AIDS will receive more than $20,000 raised by Friends of the AIDS Community Aug. 8 at a “Summer Spectacular at the Hollywood Bowl.” The benefit featured the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra and fireworks. Aid for AIDS provides financial assistance to people with AIDS.
