Bronchitis Keeps Jacobs Out of Track World Cup

Regina Jacobs, 29, of Oakland, a 1981 graduate of the Argyll Academy (now Campbell Hall High), has withdrawn from next month’s World Cup track and field meet in Havana because of bronchitis.

Jacobs, the winner of the women’s 1,500 meters in the recent U.S. Olympic trials, was eliminated in the semifinals of the Barcelona Games after coming down with a respiratory infection before the Olympics.

Two of Cal State Northridge’s five returning starters are doubtful for the Matadors’ opener Sept. 5 against Cal State Fullerton. Linebacker O.J. Ojomoh, the team’s top returning tackler, reinjured a lower calf muscle, and safety Eric Treibatch, a fourth-year starter and team captain, remains sidelined because of an upper back sprain.

Danny Abraham has taken Ojomoh’s place and Kevin Carmichael, a senior from Granada Hills High, has replaced Treibatch.

The boys’ and girls’ 14-and-under teams representing the United States defeated Japanese teams and advanced to the semifinals of an International Tennis Federation tournament in Tokyo.

The boys’ team won all three of its matches, including a 6-0, 6-1 doubles victory by Bob Bryan of Camarillo and Geoff Abrams of Newport Beach.

The U.S team will face Taiwan in the semifinals.

In the girls’ competition, the U.S team prevailed, 2-1. Mei Lin Tu of Northridge won her singles match, 6-1, 6-0.

The U.S girls defeated Italy, 2-1, in the first round and will next play Germany.

Mike Shwartzer and Ken Lumpkin hit home runs to lead the Woodland Hills Astros to a 14-7 victory in the opening round of the Lake Tahoe Invitational Semi-Pro Baseball tournament at South Lake Tahoe on Thursday.

Five area racquetball players won medals Thursday in the North American Maccabi Youth Games in Baltimore.

Marc Pollack of West Hills won a gold medal in boys’ 15-16 singles then teamed with Gil Harari, also of West Hills, to win the doubles event, and Gabe Feldman of Calabasas won gold medals in boys’ 13-14 singles and doubles.

Darrel Bayer of West Hills and Brian Hurwitz of Woodland Hills won silver medals in boys’ 15-16 doubles. Bayer also won a bronze in singles competition.

Ron Winger of Tarzana, who led after three rounds, fell into fourth place after Thursday’s fifth round of the Ebonite PBA Senior event at Cheektowaga, N.Y.
