Olympic 100-meter sprint champions struggled during the Van Damme Memorial Grand Prix in Brussels. Nigerian Olapade Adeniken beat men’s gold medalist Linford Christie for the third time since Barcelona, and Merlene Ottey defeated women’s gold medalist Gail Devers. Devers came back to win the 100-meter hurdles in 12.64, fourth-best of the season.

Moses Kiptanui of Kenya, who missed the Olympics, came close to his third world record this month but fell short of the standard of 12:58.39 set by Moroccan Said Aouita. Kiptanui ran 13:00.93, the third-fastest time ever. He has set world records in the 3,000 meters and the steeplechase since the Olympics.

Pole vaulter Sergei Bubka made three unsuccessful attempts at a world-record 20 feet 1 inch--one half-inch above his current mark--after winning the event at 19-2 1/4.
