Ruth Southard Sohn; Novelist Wrote ‘No Sad Songs for Me’

Ruth Southard Sohn, 84, whose poignant novel “No Sad Songs for Me” was made into the 1950 popular film of that name. The novel--the only work she published--was written in 1944 and told of a young wife who was found to have a sweeping cancer that would kill her within eight months. She spent the time planning her husband’s future. In the picture, adapted by Howard Koch, Margaret Sullavan portrayed the dying woman, Wendell Corey her husband and Natalie Wood the daughter.
