Notebook Computer War: Toshiba America’s computer division will introduce three notebook computers today to compete with low-priced products from computer makers such as Compaq Computer Corp., the company said Monday.

The computer division in Irvine will launch its Satellite Series of notebook computers, weighing 6.8 pounds to 7.3 pounds apiece, later this year. Prices for the computers, which are slimmed-versions of more expensive models, will range from $1,799 to $3,299.

The line includes two black-and-white models and a color version. Toshiba America Information Systems in Irvine is a subsidiary of Tokyo-based Toshiba Corp.

“We’re aiming at an entry-level, value-oriented customer who requires lots of capability without all the usual bells and whistles,” said Grant Johnson, a marketing official at the company.
