Parole Hearing Canceled for Officer Convicted of Murder
A parole hearing scheduled for today for convicted murderer Paul Perveler was canceled at his request.
Perveler, a former Los Angeles police officer, was convicted in 1969 of murdering his second wife and his girlfriend’s husband to collect insurance money.
He was also convicted of attempting to murder his first wife, Lela Halverson of Glendale, in a similar scheme.
For the past 10 years, Halverson said, she has feared that her ex-husband would be released on parole and take revenge on her for testifying against him.
Last month, Assemblyman Pat Nolan (R-Glendale) and other local officials mounted a postcard and petition drive, urging the state Board of Prison Terms to deny Perveler’s parole request and to postpone any future parole hearings for at least three years.
Because he withdrew his request for a parole hearing, Perveler will be eligible for parole consideration again next year.
