LONG BEACH : Spruce Goose Will Be Closed to Public in 10 Days

The Spruce Goose, the world’s largest aircraft, will be on public display for 10 more days before it moves from its Long Beach berth to a new home in McMinnville, Ore.
Beginning Sept. 13, tourists, residents and aviation buffs will be prohibited from viewing the mammoth craft as experts continue to dismantle it for transport.
Visitors have arrived in record numbers to watch the removal of the propellers, engines and pontoons on Howard Hughes’ legendary craft since the dismantling began Aug. 10.
But the most monumental task, removal of the 159-foot wings, requires disassembly of a 3,000-square-foot section of the protective white dome that covers the Spruce Goose, making visitation impractical, officials said.
