Ballet Theatre Crisis: American Ballet Theatre called its dancers to “an emergency meeting” Thursday at its New York headquarters to address the company’s current fiscal crisis--and the rumors that it will either cancel its upcoming U.S. tour or merge with another arts organization. The 53-year-old company reportedly owes more than $5 million to various banks and cannot make payments on the debts. Autumn tours to Japan and Argentina (both financed in advance) are expected to be completed, but the company’s future remains in doubt. A board meeting is scheduled for Wednesday.
