Cal State Fullerton Opens Season in New Stadium Against Northridge
Cal State Fullerton will play the first football game in its new, 10,000-seat campus stadium tonight against Cal State Northridge at 6.
Neither the Titans, coming off a 2-9 season, nor Northridge, which was 3-7 in 1991, are expected to be very strong this season, but tonight’s game will feature the Matadors’ strong suit, the running of tailback Jamal Farmer, against Fullerton’s strength, the run defense of inside linebackers Lorenzo Hailey, Mike Gullo and John Haynes.
Farmer is a transfer from Hawaii who rushed for 2,124 yards in 440 carries in 2 1/2 seasons before quitting the team midway through last season. The 5-foot-10, 225-pound senior was the Western Athletic Conference freshman of the year in 1989.
Hailey, a senior who redshirted last season, led the Titans in tackles in 1990 with 99.
