Darryl Strawberry appeared in his second game Monday since beginning the testing period for his injured back, but still doesn’t seem to be testing it.

He might have cost the Dodgers a run during the fourth inning when he was slow to charge and make a throw on Mark Lemke’s single. This allowed Lonnie Smith to score from second.

During the seventh inning, he didn’t even try to make a throw home on a single by David Justice, allowing Terry Pendleton to score easily from second.

He finally removed himself from the game during the eighth inning, saying, “It was late in the game, there was no need to continue playing.”

At bat, Strawberry had a strikeout, a flyout to right field and a groundout.

“He is not sharp,” Manager Tom Lasorda said. “I just know if his back hurts him, he should get the operation done now, and not wait.”

Brett Butler was still not commenting on his shoving match with John Candelaria, which occurred Sunday when Butler tried to intervene in a shouting match between Candelaria and Todd Benzinger. Benzinger was not involved in their scuffle. . . . Jose Offerman ran the bases at full speed and appears ready to return from a groin injury that has sidelined him for eight days. But the Dodgers might want to take a longer look at Rafael Bournigal.
