The only major college or professional team in Southern California that won a football game last weekend was Cal State Fullerton. . . .

But the Titans’ victory over Cal State Northridge somehow failed to impress a group that continues to call for a UCLA-fan boycott of the Fullerton-Bruin game at the Rose Bowl Saturday night. . . .

“I don’t understand the controversy,” UCLA Athletic Director Peter Dalis said. “These people, who refuse to identify themselves and have had no communication with me, ought to look around. Stanford played Cornell and Cal played Pacific last year. Washington plays Pacific this year.” . . .

Actually, the Bruins were supposed to open the season against another Big West team, Cal State Long Beach, but the 49ers dropped football after dropping a lot of footballs last season. . . .

“I began by calling other schools that were on the Long Beach schedule about coming to the Rose Bowl,” Dalis said. “I wanted Wyoming. They wouldn’t even return my call. I wanted Hawaii. They said no. At first, Fullerton also said no. But then Terry Donahue called (Fullerton Coach) Gene Murphy and eventually we were able to make the game.” . . .

Leaflets distributed by the anonymous boycotters claim that the Bruins could have played Notre Dame in the Disneyland Pigskin Classic at Anaheim Stadium in what would have been a 12th game. . . .

“The date of the Pigskin Classic was Aug. 26,” Dalis said. “That meant our players would have had to report to practice 2 1/2 weeks earlier. I talked to our chancellor, who thought that would be unfair because we’re on the quarter system and our kids don’t get out of school until the third week in June. They would have been deprived of a lot of vacation time.” . . .

Dalis said there was never any formal discussion about the Bruins playing Notre Dame in the Pigskin Classic, but that he has tried to get the Irish on the schedule for 10 years. . . .

“Notre Dame will play Stanford, but won’t play us,” Dalis said. “I assume it’s because of their long-standing relationship with USC. I can understand that.” . . .

For the record: Don and David Shula are not the only father and son to serve as head coaches in the NFL. Wade Phillips coached the last four games of the 1985 season for the New Orleans Saints, replacing his father Bum. . . .

When you were watching the Dallas Cowboys squander all those opportunities in the first half Monday night and the Washington Redskins close to within 9-7, didn’t you think the Redskins were going to pull it out? . . .
