PRO FOOTBALL : DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Elway Adds L.A. to List of Drives

The Raiders have joined The List.

John Elway’s memorable march down the field to beat them in Sunday’s season opener was the 20th time the Denver Bronco quarterback has successfully pulled off a fourth-quarter comeback drive.

He has done it in 10 of his 11 years in the league, missing only in 1988. He has done it at home and away, in the regular season and postseason, against good teams and bad.

Topping the list is Elway’s 1986 drive against the Cleveland Browns in the AFC championship game. He covered 98 yards in 15 plays, culminating with a five-yard touchdown pass to Mark Jackson.

That one has simply become known as The Drive.

Next was last season’s divisional playoff game against the Houston Oilers when Elway again started at his two and put together a 12-play drive that ended with David Treadwell’s 28-yard game-winning field goal.

That one became The Drive II.

Elway pulled off his first memorable fourth-quarter drive against the then-Baltimore Colts in 1983, his rookie year.

Since then, he has victimized the Chargers (three times), the Chiefs (three times), the Browns (twice), the Steelers (twice), the Seahawks (twice), the Patriots, the 49ers, the Packers, the Bears, the Cardinals and the Oilers.

Elway, however, has never had much success against the Raiders. He was 5-11 against them until Sunday.

“We weren’t on his list,” Raider defensive lineman Howie Long said. “But we are now.”
