Long Beach : City Auditor Resigning to Teach at Pepperdine

Auditor Robert Fronke will resign next month to teach full time at Pepperdine University’s School of Business Management.
Fronke, who has served as city auditor for 16 years, has frequently taken the council to task over its spending habits. City officials criticized him over the years for some of his more controversial audits, including one in 1985 that showed that the Queen Mary operation should have been paying more property taxes. But council members on Tuesday praised Fronke.
“I have been very impressed with Mr. Fronke’s record,” Mayor Ernie Kell said.
The City Council agreed Tuesday to replace Fronke with Assistant City Auditor Gary L. Burroughs.
“One of my greatest accomplishments is leaving behind an office of professionals well-trained and well-prepared to carry on,” Fronke said.
Burroughs will serve as auditor from Oct. 2 until the term expires in 1994. Long Beach is one of only two cities in the state that elects its auditor.
