SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The assassination of President John F. Kennedy in Dallas on Nov. 22, 1963, followed by the bloody events of 1968, which ended in the deaths of Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy, marked the end of America’s Camelot years. Although the Warren Commission arrived at the conclusion that Lee Harvey Oswald killed John Kennedy, hundreds of books have been written (four new ones were published this year) proposing conspiracy theories implicating the CIA, FBI, Lyndon Johnson, the Mafia, Fidel Castro, Kennedy’s own Secret Service guards and space aliens.

Now Vincent Bugliosi, who prosecuted Charles Manson and 1,000 other cases while serving in the Los Angeles district attorney’s office, is writing a book to re-establish the case against Oswald as the lone killer. Bugliosi, author of “Helter Skelter,” based on the Manson trial, and the recent “The Sea Will Tell,” written with Bruce Henderson, says, “The factually flawed Oliver Stone movie ‘JFK’ has fueled the public’s belief in conspiracies adding to the incredible nonsense put forth by conspiracy theory people, who in many cases haven’t bothered to read the Warren Commission report.”

Bugliosi will discuss the JFK assassination and answer questions about his role as a former prosecutor and true crime author at the Ventura County Writers Club annual fund-raiser at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18, in the Camarillo Community Center, 1605 E. Burnley St. The fee is $6 in advance or $8 at the door. Send checks to VCWC, P.O. Box 7484, Thousand Oaks, 91359 or call 485-0339 or (818) 889-4503.
