LOS ANGELES AIRPORT : Commissioners Postpone Decision on Solicitors
Threatened with a new series of lawsuits based on state constitutional issues, the Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners on Thursday postponed a decision on whether to ban solicitors from the terminals at Los Angeles International and Ontario airports.
The proposed resolution, which would forbid people to seek or accept donations, was drafted using legal limits set in a recent Supreme Court ruling upholding a New York ban. But lawyers for two religious sects threatened to sue based on the state Constitution, which they said is more lenient.
Airport board member Johnnie L. Cochran, noting that the Department of Airports spent more than $200,000 in losing a single case before the U.S. Supreme Court in 1987, suggested that the board postpone a decision until more public opinion could be gathered on the issue.
