Town Cooks Up Scheme to Save Its Police Force

An old-fashioned bake sale may raise enough dough to keep police in this small town.

Pax, about 45 miles southeast of Charleston, has a police chief and two part-time officers protecting its 167 residents. It has a $10,000 budget.

Chief Curtis Daugherty said the force needs $600 to $700 to keep its cruisers running. Otherwise, state police and county sheriff’s deputies will take over the law enforcement duties.

The Town Council last month balked at a plan to impose a special assessment after some residents objected. Rummage sales and a flea market were proposed as fund-raisers, but residents favored a bake sale.

A meeting was planned for today to decide who will bake what items.
