COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Washington’s 82-Yard Run Propels OCC

Eric Washington scored on an 82-yard run midway through the fourth quarter to help Orange Coast to a 16-14 season-opening victory over Long Beach Friday at OCC.

Washington finished with 145 yards in 17 carries to beat Long Beach for the third consecutive time in the season opener. The Pirates are 6-1 under Coach Bill Workman and are 30-12-3 in the first game of the season.

Washington finished with 148 of OCC’s 185 yards in total offense. Long Beach led, 7-0, at the half but OCC tied it on a 47-yard interception return by Brent Johnson with 11 minutes 55 seconds left in the third quarter. The Pirates took the lead, 10-7, when Doug Merlino kicked a 21-yard field goal. The score was set up by an interception from OCC defensive lineman Rob Senatore.

In nonconference men’s soccer:

Cypress 3, Mt. San Antonio 2--With 15 seconds remaining in the match and the score tied, 2-2, Cypress halfback George Charleworth scored on a free kick, lifting the Chargers to victory. Freshman goalkeeper Ken Putnam had 11 goal saves in the season opener for the Chargers (1-0). Mt. San Antonio is 0-2.

In the Bakersfield women’s soccer tournament:

Orange Coast 2, Canada 0--Amy Cook scored the first goal on an assist early in the first half. Jennifer Crispin, who kicked the second goal after a breakaway midway through the second half, took the ball the entire length of the field for the score. Orange Coast is 1-0-1.

In nonconference women’s volleyball:

Golden West 3, Santa Barbara 0--Golden West, the two-time defending state champion, opened the season with a 15-4, 15-3, 15-8 victory at Santa Barbara.

Long Beach City 3, Cypress 0--Vanessa Embry had eight kills and five aces for visiting Long Beach City (1-0). Cypress is 0-1.

At the San Diego Mesa women’s cross-country invitational:

Hildebrand Wins--Saddleback cross-country runner Sonja Hildebrand won the San Diego Mesa Invitational with a time of 19:56.17. Cesar Lopez of San Diego Mesa won the men’s division with a time of 21:12.
