STEP RIGHT UP

In his first start at quarterback, Irvine’s Aron Garcia, who replaced two-year starter Jason Minici, had a solid if not spectacular opener, completing 13 of 23 passes for 156 yards. He had one pass intercepted and scored Irvine’s second touchdown in a 20-0 victory over Capistrano Valley.

GOING TO THE WHIP

Bruce Rollinson, Mater Dei High School football coach, competed last Saturday in a one-lap harness match race against the school’s principal, Lyle Porter, at Los Alamitos Race Course.

Rollinson drove Quiet Thunder against Porter’s Monarch Magic in a charity race that raised $2,000 for the Monarchs’ football program.

“The trick to driving is to hold on tight, get to the rail as quickly as possible and try not to get squeezed out around the last turn,” Rollinson said.

Porter and Monarch Magic edged Rollinson and Quiet Thunder at the finish line for the win. “If you’re going to lose, I guess it should be to your principal,” Rollinson said.

NOTEWORTHY

Marina played Friday night’s game against Los Alamitos in honor of Dan Guest, a wide receiver-defensive back who was hospitalized last week after being injured in a scrimmage.

Guest, a 6-foot-2, 175-pound senior, was on the sidelines in a wheelchair after being released from the hospital earlier in the day.

Guest is recovering from a ruptured spleen and internal bleeding he suffered in the Vikings’ Sept. 2 scrimmage. He underwent surgery and was hospitalized for nine days.

Jaret Wright, son of former Angel pitcher Clyde Wright, rushed for three touchdowns and passed for two others to spark Katella to a 49-0 rout of Magnolia.
