PREP FOOTBALL : Hall’s Two Interceptions Help Fountain Valley Beat Dana Hills

Share

Defensive back Jonathan Hall’s two interceptions led Fountain Valley High School to a 10-7 victory over Dana Hills Friday night in the season opener for both teams.

Hall, a 5-8, 165-pound senior, got the two biggest plays of the night for the Barons. On the game’s first play, Dana Hills quarterback Scott Covington was intercepted by Hall, giving the Barons a first down on the Dolphins’ 36-yard line.

Hall’s second interception came at another key moment--the Dolphins’ final offensive play--and ended a final Dana Hills rally.

Fountain Valley scored first with 4:18 left in the first half when quarterback Scott Bertoni hooked up with wide receiver Bryan Gail for a 30-yard touchdown. Mike Gillis’ extra point capped an 11-play, 38-yard drive and made the score 7-0.

Gillis’ 38-yard field goal with 11:42 left in the game gave the Barons a 10-0 lead. The scoring drive was aided by a penalty when the Dolphins were called for having 12 men on the field.

Dana Hills’ only touchdown came late in the game. Junior running back Mark Reynosa broke off right tackle and rambled 44 yards to the Barons’ five. Two plays later, Reynosa scored from the five.
