On a Cleanup Mission
Your article, “Modern Missionaries” (Sept. 2) tells it like it is. After the riots last April, I organized a graffiti sweep of Melrose Avenue. I posted the cleanup in several of the throwaway papers as well as with Operation Clean Sweep.
The day of the cleanup, 30 Mormon missionaries showed up ready, willing and able to work. It amazed me that all of these young men from Montana, South Dakota and Utah would eagerly volunteer to help clean up L.A.’s riot-scarred streets.
Since May, the Mormon missionaries have pitched in on five occasions, cleaning up the graffiti around the Miracle Mile. In return they ask for nothing but lunch.
