Manufacturing Profit Up in Second Quarter: The Commerce Department said after-tax profit averaged a seasonally adjusted 3.9 cents for each dollar of sales, or a total of $28.26 billion, up from 3.7 cents in the first quarter, when they totaled $25.77 billion. The gains came in a range of industries, including electrical machinery, transportation equipment, and food and tobacco. In the second quarter of 1991, profit averaged 3.2 cents for every dollar of sales.
