Computer Order Puts Tandon Backlog at 40,000

Tandon Corp. of Moorpark has received an order for 8,000 personal computers from a British firm, Crown Computer Products. The order brings Tandon’s backlog to 40,000 PCs, company spokesman Mike Sanders said.

Deliveries under the order will begin after the end of the year and continue through January, 1993, according to Sanders. Terms of the purchase were not disclosed.

Tandon also announced that it is contracting with turnkey suppliers to manufacture some of its computers to “supplement the limited working capital presently available” to the company. An agreement has already been reached with a supplier in the Asia/Pacific region and a similar arrangement is being negotiated with companies in Europe and North America, Sanders said.

The spokesman said the new suppliers will be called on to serve new business only and that current employment at Tandon’s headquarters will not be affected. The company, which reduced its payroll earlier this year, now has 1,350 employees worldwide, 600 of them in Moorpark.

Tandon sells most of its PCs in Europe, and suffered losses in 1991 and early in 1992 due mainly to the worldwide economic slowdown and price-cutting in the computer industry.
