LOS ANGELES : School Board Hears Testimony on Budget Crisis

Share

Teachers, office workers and other employees told the Los Angeles school board Wednesday they are willing to work with officials to solve the district’s fiscal crisis, but reiterated demands that any pay cuts be equitable and imposed as a last resort.

The special board meeting was held to hear public testimony about a report on the district’s financial condition, released by an independent commission chaired by former state Atty. Gen. John K. Van de Kamp. Most of the speakers addressed the large pay cuts facing district employees.

“We’ve wanted to be treated justly, fairly and with respect,” said Connie Moreno of the California School Employees Assn. “All we ask is you don’t balance this budget on our backs anymore. You’ve done that the last four years.”

The school board is expected to adopt a final budget on Sept. 29.
