Alzheimer’s Unit Receives $400,000

Motion Picture and Television Fund’s new Harry’s Haven Alzheimer’s unit, (named after Kirk Douglas’ father) received $400,000, net proceeds raised at the Sept. 12 American Cinema Awards gala at the Beverly Hilton. Honorees were Frank Sinatra, Whoopi Goldberg and Jack Valenti. The event, attended by more than 1,400 guests, included Gene and Pat Kelly, Veronique and Gregory Peck, Barbara and Marvin Davis, Ted Danson, Robert Wagner and Jill St. John, Richard Pryor and other celebrities. Anne and Kirk Douglas were chairs of the event, underwritten by Celia Lipton Farris.

National Council on the Aging netted $25,000 at its June 26 benefit luncheon and fashion show at the Four Seasons Hotel. Honorees were Virginia Allen, Sybil Brand, Dorothy Goren, Lilly Lee, Vilma Martinez and Marilyn Solomon. Proceeds will provide services for the frail and elderly and create volunteer and employment opportunities for older Americans. Lynn Ziman chaired the event.

Make-a-Wish Foundation received $10,000, net proceeds raised at the Aug. 18 10th anniversary celebration at the Rangoon Racquet Club. Actors Barbara Carrera and Michael Lerner hosted the benefit. The foundation grants special wishes to children with terminal and life-threatening illnesses.

Rebuild L.A. received $15,000, net proceeds from a Sept. 10 fund-raiser, sponsored by Motion Picture Corp. of America. The event, held at the Sand and Sea Club in Santa Monica, was hosted by Brad Krevoy and Steven Stabler.

Love Is Feeding Everyone received a $2,000 grant July 20 from the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. at its 50th anniversary and installation of officers dinner at the Beverly Hilton.

Children’s Comprehensive Epilepsy Center at Childrens Hospital received a $175,000 grant, the third of a three-year grant, from Good Hope Medical Foundation. The gift will help the center provide comprehensive treatment for children with epilepsy, major research for investigation of epilepsy in the brain and an educational support system dealing with misconceptions and fears concerning the disease. The center ranks third in the country for treatment of epilepsy.

Two recent fund-raising events benefiting Casina Colina Centers for Rehabilitation netted $144,000. Funds will provide ongoing specialized medical rehabilitation services for children and adults disabled by injury or illness. Casa Colina, headquartered in Pomona, serves communities throughout Southern California.

St. Vincent Senior Citizen Nutrition Meals on Wheels Program announced receipt of $25,000 from the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation. The gift is a matching grant from the Wolfgang Puck Charitable Foundation.

Fran Joswick Therapeutic Riding Center received $15,000 from Kismet Women’s Auxiliary’s recent black tie gala at the Ritz Carlton in Laguna Niguel. Proceeds will pay for horse care, special tack and therapists assisting disabled individuals.
