COLLEGE FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : UCLA : Freshman Quarterbacks Might Play

Share

Freshman quarterbacks Ryan Fien and Scott Fitterer figured to be redshirts this season. But with starting quarterback Wayne Cook suffering a season-ending knee injury in the Bruins’ opener, Fien and Fitterer might play this season.

Coach Terry Donahue, who has not decided on a backup to quarterback Rob Walker, plans to take senior John Barnes, who transferred to UCLA after UC Santa Barbara dropped football, Fien and Fitterer to Provo, Utah, for Saturday’s game against Brigham Young.

‘It’s a great opportunity,” Fitterer said. “You feel bad for the team and you really feel bad for Wayne because he worked so hard, but on the other hand, it’s a good opportunity for the rest of the quarterbacks.”

Fien agreed.

“I came in here thinking that I’d redshirt,” he said. “You always want to play, but the reality is that quarterbacks usually redshirt. Now that I’ve got the opportunity I’ve got to keep working hard.”

Flanker Bryan Adams, who has a sprained ankle, and guard James Christensen, who has a pinched nerve in his neck, won’t make the trip.
