JUMP IN THE POOL: If everybody lived up to his or her pledge, there were 23,590 fewer vehicles on the road Thursday. The county Transportation Authority’s Rideshare Day--part of a statewide effort--produced about 4,000 more car-poolers than it did last year. Says the agency’s Mark Maloney: “We were pretty pleased because with the economy the way it is and layoffs, we were just glad not to be down.” For example, he says, Los Angeles County had about 20,000 fewer car-poolers than last year.
