I was astonished and gratified to read on Aug. 9 that the Mystery Writers of America, by naming their awards for him, have finally recognized the genius of Edgar Allen Poe, whose reputation has been overshadowed for so long by that other writer with a similar name.

Who could ever forget E. Allen Poe’s poems--”The Ravin’ ” and “The Balls,” to name only two--or his atmospheric stories of horror and mystery--”The Fall of the House of Escher” and “The Murders in the Rude Morgue”?
