The second of three armed men who led San Diego police on a brief car chase and fired about 20 gunshot rounds at a patrol car was in custody Saturday, authorities said.

The man was arrested after police chased him down a canyon in the 3700 block of 10th Avenue about 10 p.m. Friday, said police spokesman Dave Cohen. A companion had been arrested earlier. Both men were not identified by police.

The incident began about 9 p.m., when police spotted a car with three men thought to be involved in a holdup at a bank automated-teller machine in Hillcrest, police said.

The suspects were chased on California 163 and on streets near Balboa Park before abandoning the car near the canyon’s edge, police said. Several shots had been fired at pursuing officers, officials said. A single bullet hit the center of the patrol car’s window, Cohen said. One officer was cut slightly on the nose by a shard of glass, he said.

The officers involved were identified as John Mcgill, 29, a seven year veteran on the force, and Scott Carter, 26, who graduated from the police academy six months ago.
