In response to “Herschensohn Opposes $7.6 Billion in Storm Relief to Florida,” Sept. 10:

I was visiting family in my hometown of Miami during Hurricane Andrew, sitting out 160 m.p.h. gusts in my brother’s home in Kendall. Thankfully he lost only his screened patio and all his foliage. His neighbor wasn’t so fortunate; half a pine tree crashed through his roof. My aunt and uncle lost several rooms to water damage and two cars to blowing debris.

But we were all luckier than the 250,000 average, hard-working South Floridians now without homes. Perhaps GOP Senate candidate Bruce Herschensohn should meet some of these people.

It may resonate with California conservatives that their current darling wants to keep the lid on government spending. But can you imagine Sen. Herschensohn, after an earthquake, turning down federal funds as half of Los Angeles County lies in ruin?
