Joe Paterno switched quarterbacks, then tried to avoid talk of a controversy at Penn State.

Paterno benched freshman Wally Richardson, who led the 10th-ranked Nittany Lions to two consecutive victories, and John Sacca took over in a 52-7 victory over Eastern Michigan Saturday at State College, Md.

“I thought we better go with John,” Paterno said. “John had more experience.

“I just don’t went to rush Wally. I talked to them (Friday) before the squad meeting and told them I was going to play both. I told Wally I wanted to keep the pressure off him so he can work his way in.”
