Colony Agrees to Chinese Demands on Airport: In a move highlighting China’s power over Hong Kong, the colonial government has agreed to Chinese demands to pay for most of the territory’s multibillion-dollar airport with cash. The announcement brought the two parties a step closer toward carrying out what could be one of the great engineering feats of the 1990s. The $10.6-billion project is considered important to the future of the territory as an international business center. K. Y. Yeung, the colony’s secretary for the treasury, said the British side put forward a proposal that draws heavily on Chinese suggestions.
