Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego has established a new undergraduate program in earth sciences, officials announced Monday.

The program will focus on the evolution of the Earth. It will emphasize mathematics, physics and chemistry.

In conjunction with the program, Scripps faculty this fall will offer courses in geology, geochemistry and geophysics.

In the past, only graduate students have been able to obtain an earth science degree at UCSD. The new program is viewed as an interim step as officials set up an earth sciences department.

“This program builds on a nearly 25-year cooperative effort between Scripps and the physics and chemistry departments to offer interdisciplinary courses in earth sciences,” said Edward A. Frieman, Scripps’ director.

“Ultimately, we plan to establish an earth sciences department as a joint effort between Scripps and the other departments, but in the meantime this transition program will give UCSD students an excellent opportunity to gain extensive experience in earth system science.”
