CASTAIC : Race Brawl Erupts at Pitchess Jail

Share

The latest in a series of what are believed to racially motivated fights between Latino and black prisoners at the Peter Pitchess jail in Castaic occurred early Sunday morning, leaving three inmates with minor injuries, sheriff’s deputies said.

The fight erupted about 12:30 a.m. at the North County Correction Facility of the county jail when a black inmate began to argue with a Latino inmate, said Deputy Patrick Hauser.

The nature of the argument was under investigation.

Hauser said 20 Latinos and 10 blacks--all housed in the same dorm--were involved in the fight before deputies quelled it by turning a fire hose on them.

Three inmates were treated for minor injuries at the facility’s clinic. Since June, 1991, there have been more than 40 fights between Latino and black inmates.
