A firefighter bitten while trying to get a rattlesnake out of a home in the Malibu hills was listed in serious condition Monday at UCLA Medical Center, a county Fire Department spokesman said.

Randy Sparks, 37, initially was in critical condition when he was airlifted to the hospital after Sunday night’s incident at 23633 Dresser Road, said Fire Inspector Clark Pearson. Sparks and other firefighters went to the residence after a report that a diamondback rattlesnake was in the house, Pearson said.

“The snake was in a bedroom, and the firefighter was moving the bed to get to where the snake was when he was bitten on the right index finger,” Pearson said. The two-foot-long snake was killed, Pearson said. Sparks is expected to be hospitalized for about 10 days, Pearson said.
