Political Bias Against Women

Share

Virginia Postrel complains that intellectual women speakers at the political conventions--Carla Hills and Condoleeza Rice (Republicans) and Barbara Jordan (Democrat)--were all but ignored by the media giants (Commentary, Sept. 15).

Postrel obviously was not watching her local public broadcasting station. MacNeil-Lehrer, in conjunction with NBC and Tom Brokaw, gave complete speech coverage to all three of these ladies, even to Mrs. Hills’ posturing for the audience, first to the left, then the center, then to the right, then a repeat of the process. Good coaching, I think.

One would have thought the vaunted editor of Reason magazine might have had the good sense to turn the dial or consult her TV guide. That same editor could not resist a resentful slap at Murphy Brown for cooing to her newborn TV babe, “You make me feel like a natural woman.” Lighten up, Virginia. Is there really anything wrong with feeling like a natural woman, oh mighty intellectual one?
