PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : RAMS : No Bids Expected on 4 Free Agents

Share

Although Coach Chuck Knox said he didn’t want to comment until he knew the full ramifications of Thursday’s court order temporarily granting four veteran players free agency, a team source said it was not likely the Rams would be involved in bidding for any of them.

Philadelphia Eagle tight end Keith Jackson is the most prominent of the group, but he has reportedly turned down a $1.3 million-per-year offer from the Eagles.

“I don’t have any comment to make on that until I see who the four people are and also what the judge’s ruling was,” Knox said.

Linebacker Leon White, recently signed as a free agent by the Rams, originally was a part of the plaintiff group but was dropped from the suit when the Cincinnati Bengals released him.

Knox has stayed away from declaring a starter at free safety, but it appears that Anthony Newman, who has played well during Pat Terrell’s neck injury, leading the team in interceptions, will see much of the action at that position Sunday against the New York Jets, even though Terrell is ready to come back.

Newman started the first game at strong safety but moved to free safety after Terrell’s injury.

Tight end Jim Price, a key figure of the Rams’ offensive plans in the exhibition season, will miss Sunday’s game with continued shoulder problems. “We hope to have him ready next week,” Knox said. “This is at least what I’m told by our medical people. So we’ll have to wait and see. He’s been nicked about the whole (season).” . . . There are 25,252 tickets remaining for Sunday’s game against the Jets, which means it will not be televised locally.
