IN BRIEF : Home Study Course for Older Drivers

Share

The Responsible Driver Course for persons age 55 and over with good driving records is available as a home study program, under a pilot project of the Department of Motor Vehicles’ Research Department.

Instead of attending an all-day class, seniors read the study book, then complete and mail in a final questionnaire and survey to receive the DMV Mature Driver Certificate.

The certificate can be presented to an auto insurance agent or company for a 5%-10% auto insurance discount good for three years, in accordance with the California Vehicle Code. Check with your carrier to determine eligibility.

The study book, by traffic safety educator Everett Admundson, includes a refresher on rules of the road, hazardous situations, health and driving, and defensive driving. It is designed to help seniors drive smarter, safer and longer.

The course costs $21. To enroll, make a check payable to R.D.C. and mail it to: Responsible Driver Course, P.O. Box 109-H, Whittier, Calif. 90608. For further information, call your insurance agent or the Responsible Driver Course at (800) 233-0226.
