School Elections

Claudia Pearce protests (Commentary, Sept. 20) that right-wing Christians have no right to run for school boards unless they “show up at public forums and stay in town during the last stages of elections.” Pearce makes clear that these rules are needed to make sure that people of certain religious beliefs are prevented from serving on school boards.

This is a foolhardy, shortsighted and even anti-democratic point of view. Contrary to Pearce, to represent all the people fairly school boards ideally should have members who represent both conservative and left-wing opinions about politics and religion. Otherwise, the public inevitably will suffer left-wing autocracy (Pearce’s choice) or the right-wing variety. Neither is acceptable in our representative form of government.
