Robert (Bob) La Brasca, senior and executive editor at L.A. Style magazine during a period when it became one of the most honored regional journals in the United States, has died. He was 49.

La Brasca died Thursday while vacationing with his wife, Tara Fass, and their 2-year-old daughter, Jana, in New York City. He died of a heart attack.

La Brasca had worked as cultural critic or editor on a variety of national and local publications, including the Madison Capital Times, Press Connection and L.A. Weekly before going to L.A. Style in 1985.

During his tenure, the magazine won eight “Maggies” from the Western Publication Assn.--four for overall design and four as best city, new or consumer magazine--and more than 20 other awards for design or content.

“He was a superb writer and by far the best line editor I have ever known,” said L.A. Style founder Joie Davidow.

In addition to his wife and daughter, La Brasca is survived by his mother, Shirley, father, Ray, and brother, Kenneth, in his native Racine, Wis., and two sisters, Nancy Olsen of Berlin, Wis., and Janis Skogen of Tucson.

The family has asked that any memorial contributions be made to the American Red Cross Emergency Relief Fund.
