Chuck Finley is trying to make up for a poor season with an eye toward next year.

“I’ve done well the second half, but the first half was a total disaster,” said Finley, who shut out Chicago for seven innings as the Angels defeated the White Sox, 1-0, to end a five-game losing streak.

The game was interrupted by rain three times, costing Finley a chance of pitching his second shutout of the season.

There was a 24-minute delay in the fourth inning and a 33-minute interruption in the eighth. After play resumed for three pitches, there was another delay of 25 minutes.

Finley (6-12) gave up four hits. Steve Lewis pitched 1 1/3 innings, and Steve Frey got two outs for his third save.

“I would have liked to finish, but there already were two delays and I was over 100 pitches,” Finley said. “The best thing was to do something right for the team and bring in fresh arms. I want to finish strong to set myself up for next year.”

Manager Buck Rodgers didn’t hesitate in making the move.

“I didn’t want to hurt him. He’s had a tough year since suffering a toe injury in spring training, and he doesn’t pitch well against this club,” said Rodgers. Finley is 6-7 against the White Sox.

With one out in the Angel third inning, John Orton doubled, went to third on an infield out and scored on Chad Curtis’ second hit of the game, a single to right.

Chicago’s Alex Fernandez (8-11) gave up seven hits in eight innings with no walks and four strikeouts.

But, Fernandez said: “It wasn’t good enough. I gave up one too many runs.”
