NHL : Rangers Too Strong for Kings, 6-2

Darren Turcotte scored two goals and John Vanbiesbrouck made 26 saves as the New York Rangers defeated the Kings, 6-2, in an exhibition game Saturday night.

Jari Kurri opened the scoring with a power-play goal 3:55 into the game, and Turcotte tied it with 53 seconds to play in the first period.

Turcotte made it 2-1 at 3:55 of the second period with the first of New York’s five goals in the period. Tie Domi, Randy Gilhen, Phil Bourque and Joe Cirella followed with goals in a 10-minute span to give the Rangers (3-0-1) a 6-1 lead.

Kurri added a third-period goal for the Kings (1-2-2).

The Kings announced that they have assigned defensemen Rene Chapdelaine and Paul Holden, center Shawn McCosh, left wing Sylvain Couturier and right wing Brandy Semchuk to the Phoenix Roadrunners of the International Hockey League.

The team also returned goaltenders Darcy Austin and Sandy Allan, defensemen Justin Hocking, Michael Gaul and Troy Hjertaas, left wing Jeff Shevalier and right wings Kevin Brown and Ryan Pisial to their respective junior clubs.

They also released defensemen Martin Maskerinec and Mattis Olsson, centers Steve Bogoyevac and Joe Flanagan, left wing Jim Larkin and goaltender Pauli Jaks.
