PLATFORM : Relieving Anxiety

GEORGE L. BRAGG is vice chairman of Western Digital Corp., an Irvine-based computer products company with 7,000 employees around the world. He comments on the company's decision to join a national collaboration of top corporations formed to fund child-care projects:

I think basically this gets back to what the needs of your employees are. Every time we have surveyed employees’ attitudes, child care always comes up as one of their priorities and I think that’s true across the nation as well.

Any time your employees are less concerned about what’s happening with their family during the day, they’re going to be more focused on what’s happening in the business environment. If their children are being well taken care of, the odds are that they’re not going to have to leave in the middle of the day because of some crisis. Anxiety about their children is probably the highest anxiety people have. If you can relieve that, you’re going to have better employees.

If, at the same time, “child care” can be augmented to become “child development,” then you really have a winner. This is a major theme of the national collaboration program.
