Collins Takes Surfing Title
Richie Collins of Newport Beach, a World Tour veteran, captured the $22,000 Body Glove Fall Classic surfing contest Sunday at Seaside Reef in Cardiff. Collins, currently ranked fourth on the Bud Surf Tour, earned $4,000 as he outclassed the rest of the field on 5- to 6-foot waves.
Shane Beschen, the current points leader with two contests remaining on the 1992 tour, was eliminated in his quarterfinal heat, while No. 2 Rob Machado of Cardiff pulled closer in points. Machado, 19, a San Dieguito High graduate, finished third and won $1,300.
Mike Lambresi of Oceanside and Doug Silva of Solana Beach, currently fifth and 16th in the standings, tied for fifth place. No. 7 Taylor Knox of Carlsbad finished tied for 13th.
MEN’S SOCCER
San Diego State saw William & Mary score twice in the final 24 minutes and lost, 2-1, in the MetLife Classic at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va. Bill Demke, who scored the Aztec goal, was named to the all-tournament team. SDSU fell to 4-3-1.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Katy Dulock did all the scoring as No. 4 UC San Diego (4-0) shut out host Claremont-Mudd, 3-0. Dulock scored her first goal unassisted. Jodie Robertson and Katie Larkin assisted on the others.
