BREA : City May Cancel Fireworks Display

Share

As part of the effort to trim city expenses, the traditional July 4 fireworks show may be discontinued.

Canceling next year’s fireworks spectacle would save the city $26,600, said Community Services Director Ret Wixted while outlining possible cuts in community services during the Parks, Recreation and Human Services Commission meeting last week.

Wixted said that one full-time position would not be filled and that funds for part-time positions would be reduced to save $33,000.

In addition to the cuts planned, Wixted said that a fund-raiser has been scheduled for the Seniors Center and that regular users of the city’s athletic field may be asked to lend support.

The city is trying to plug a $245,000 shortfall in the general fund as a result of the 9% cut in property taxes and the loss of other traditional revenue sources.

Wixted said the city still is analyzing the effect of the $2.2-million loss to the state of Redevelopment Agency funds, particularly on capital and economic development projects.

She said she will recommend to the City Council to stop adult excursions after January next year. Also proposed are: moving the Breakfast With Santa program to the Brea Mall, the Mayor’s Breakfast to the Ministerial Assn. and the Easter Egg Hunt to the Kiwanis Club.
