Viviano Dropped From Recall Bid

The leaders of a bid to recall six Orange Unified School District board members have dropped their efforts to recall Robert Viviano.

Marvella McAllister, president of Parents for a Responsible School Board, said that group members who met with Viviano are now satisfied that he did not support the board’s decision in May to demote three district principals and an assistant superintendent.

The recall drive was triggered by the demotions, which a group of parents felt did not reflect the wishes of the community, McAllister said.

The recall group has until Oct. 21 to collect 13,180 signatures on petitions seeking the recall of board members Maureen Aschoff, Lila Beavans, John Hurley, Al Irish and Bill Lewis. About 6,000 signatures have been collected so far, according to McAllister. Group leaders are not trying to recall board President Barry Resnick.

However, McAllister said some parents in the community disagreed with the decision to cease efforts for Viviano’s recall and were continuing to circulate the petitions with his name.

“We will be obligated to submit those (petitions) to the registrar of voters, but we are not endorsing it,” McAllister said.
