COLLEGE FOOTBALL: DAILY REPORT : UCLA : Gideon’s Job Not a Snap

Center Aron Gideon has played despite two broken fingers on his right hand for the last two weeks, UCLA Coach Terry Donahue said.

Gideon suffered the injury four days before the Bruins defeated Brigham Young, 17-10, but the injury wasn’t discovered until the next day.

Donahue said the Bruins haven’t used the shotgun formation as much as they have in past seasons because of Gideon’s injury.

Junior Ricky Davis, who had 14 carries for 41 yards in UCLA’s first two games this season, didn’t have any carries from scrimmage during the Bruins’ 35-7 victory over San Diego State because Donahue wanted to test freshman Sharmon Shah.

But Donahue said Davis remains in the Bruins’ tailback rotation. “We have six backs--four tailbacks and two fullbacks--who play a role on our team,” Donahue said. “ It’s not easy to keep everybody happy, but we’ve got to find a way to keep them productive.”
