Now, a word from the other “experts.” Here, two long-term Los Angeles exercisers explain why they keep sweating it out.

Nina Steiner, West Hollywood free - lance producer who works out six or seven days a week :

“Exercise is like a religion. It’s my spiritual mantra. It is not so much the physical release as the mental high. It is also the camaraderie at the health club. There is an early-morning workout group. We share. There’s a sense of community, which is unusual in Los Angeles.”

Robert Schettino, West Los Angeles public relations executive who works out six days a week:

“Exercise is an hour and a half every day without the demands of work or family. It is completely selfish. It’s my respite from everything else. It’s a way to reduce stress and stay centered--does that sound too ‘80s? It’s a sanctuary. It’s an opportunity to be by myself. I’m not very social when it comes to exercise.”
