Rebuild Commitments

Here are some of the five-year commitments made to inner-city areas in greater Los Angeles by companies working with Rebuild L.A.: Southern California Edison: Giving $35 million in cash, buildings, labor and services for job training, education, charities, aid to businesses. Pioneer Electronics: Donating $600,000 for education and job training, including an electronics industry vocational center. Vons Cos.: Building up to 12 supermarkets in the inner city. The $100-million program will generate 2,000 jobs. General Motors Corp. and its Hughes Aircraft Co. subsidiary: Redirecting $15 million in contracts to inner-city suppliers, relocating small business unit to inner city, providing other loans and education programs. Total: $18 million. Smart & Final: Building 12 food and packaged goods warehouse stores and two shopping centers at cost of $50 million, generating 400 jobs. Shell Oil Co.: Building superstation-training center for $2 million, possibly two more for $4 million, including job training center for 150 students. Additional money for education programs and rebuilding closed service stations could bring total as high as $10 million. International Business Machines Corp.: Cash and equipment donations aimed at helping minority businesses, job training programs and learning centers. Total for five-year program: $31 million.
