Events of the Coming Week

Today: The Oxnard Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting a 7:15 a.m. breakfast forum for Oxnard candidates competing in the city election for mayor, council member, treasurer and clerk. Cost is $10 with reservations and $12 at the door. The meeting will be at the Financial Plaza Hilton Hotel, 600 Esplanade Drive in Oxnard.

Today: A group of Ventura County Republicans plans to announce support for Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Barbara Boxer at a noon news conference at Alexander’s restaurant, Harbortown Marina Resort, Ventura.

Saturday: United We Stand-America, the volunteer group associated with Ross Perot, will host a Grand Opening Gala from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the group’s new Ventura County office. The group has opened an office at 475 W. Channel Islands Blvd. in Port Hueneme, where it plans to hold weekly town meetings every Tuesday at 7 p.m. For further information, call 985-2656.

Saturday and Sunday: The California Republican Party, its Victory ’92 Organization and the Bush/Quayle ’92 Campaign are leading a joint voter-registration drive from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the final weekend that voters can register for the November election. Volunteers will concentrate their efforts in Camarillo, Oxnard, Santa Paula, Simi Valley and Thousand Oaks. Call John Theiss at 520-4817 for more information.

Sunday: The Committee to Elect Simi Valley Mayor Greg Stratton will sponsor a “Sunday Dinner with the Mayor” at the Simi Valley Elks Club. The fund-raising dinner begins with cocktails at 5 p.m., with dinner served at 6 p.m. The event, which will include entertainment and a Dutch auction, costs $40 per person. The Elks Lodge is at 1561 Kuehner Drive. For reservations, call 527-0323.

Sunday: Camarillo City Council candidate Bill Brown will host an All You Can Eat Barbecue from 4 to 6 p.m. at Pleasant Valley Park in Camarillo. The barbecue, with food provided by the Thousand Oaks Meat Locker, will cost $15 per person or $25 per couple, with children under 10 accompanied by an adult admitted free. The park is at Temple Avenue and Ponderosa Drive. Tickets can be purchased in advance by calling 642-4808 or 987-4078.
